Castlegate, Pickering YO18 7AX, UK – 0370 333 1181
Despite it being a wet and drizzly day, I enjoyed my visit to this ruined castle just outside the town centre of Pickering. Most of the walls and the motte are intact and the castle itself covers a large area. The parking is relatively straightforward. You get some good panoramic views over the Vale of Pickering which is one of the reasons for the castle’s location (the other, as explained inside, is the fact it was at the crossing of north-south and east-west trade routes).
Great ruins to explore and so very lush and green. Amazing views and great to hear the steam trains coming and going from the near by (barely a 5 minute walk) train station. The circular walk around the castle wall is worth a look too. Staff are enthusiastic and friendly.
